60 Minutes: El Sistema - Music makes a difference in Venezuelan slums

Wow... This video is amazing. It's about 13 minutes long, and tells the story of a revolutionary program to teach classical music to poor children beginning at a very young age in Venezuela, and the social revolution it has created over the past 30 years. Here's a link to a news story on the BBC about the Youth Orchestra and its' fame and the far-reaching effects of this kind of program.

All-State Festival update:
Congratulations to all the students who qualified for the All-State Festival competition this year! The State chairman will be posting assigned performing times on May 8th. We will contact the students who registered for the State festival with their times as soon as they are posted for us. The festival is on Saturday, May 17th, 2008, and will be held at the Texas State University Music Building, in San Marcos, Texas. You can find driving directions to the university at Google Maps using this link: Driving Directions to Texas State University. There are many hotels nearby for those wishing to spend the night. Here are a few: Hotels near TSU San Marcos boasts many attractions, including the Prime Outlet Mall on Hwy 35, the Aquarena, river tubing, and many other exciting things to do. All-State Festival Studio Information

Eligibility: Superior Rating at Gold Cup Festival
Date: Saturday, May 17, 2008
Time: (TBA after registration)
Location: Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas
Entry Fee: $26.00 per event (NON REFUNDABLE)
Deadline: April 1, 2008 - NO EXCEPTIONS

The All-State Festival is an opportunity for each student to compete against other students state-wide in their event/level.

The music is chosen from the lest in the NFMC Festival Bulletin. Solos are required to be memorized. Duets and Hymns may use music while performing.

Vocal and Instrumental (non-piano) entrants will be responsible for an accompanist fee. The accompanist will meet with each student for at least 2 private practice sessions and then travel to San Marcos to be available for the student at the festival for both the private adjudication and the All-State performance, if a student wins. The accompanist fee is $60 per event, and must be paid by May 1st.

Gold Cup 2008

We had a wonderful turnout for the first annual San Jacinto Federated Music Club Gold Cup Junior Festival on March 1 and March 8. Students taking music lessons from our studio performed in Patriotic/Folk Song Piano Solo, Piano Solo, Piano Duet, Hymn Playing, Guitar Duet, Flute Solo, Musical Theater Vocal Solo, Art Song Vocal Solo, Musical Theater Vocal Duet, Art Song Vocal Duet, and Patriotic/Folk Vocal Solo events.

We are immensely proud of all of the hard work these students did in preparing for this festival, and commend them all for their participation. We'd also like to congratulate all the students who earned a Superior rating (including Superior Plus and Superior Minus) as they are now eligible to move ahead and compete in the TFMC All-State Music Festival for the chance to win an All-State Musician award as the most talented performer for their event and level in the entire state of Texas! You can visit the TFMC website at http://www.texasfederation.com/ but please direct questions about the festival to your teacher or visit the studio to sign your student up. Registration is due April 1 - No Exceptions will be made for late entrants, and space will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis for registration, which may be limited due to time and space constraints.

Kindermusik: Imaginative Play

Various studies have linked pretend play with language and literacy development. These studies further suggested that fantasy play incorporates aspects of adult speech as well as the opportunity for children to increase their vocabulary as they create themes and scripts and communicate these ideas to each other.

1st Annual GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

Dear Parents and Students,

The San Jacinto Federated Music Club is pleased to present the first of many Annual Gold Cup Festivals. This year, the Festival will be held At Alvin Community College, in the Fine Arts Center at 3110 Mustang Rd., in Alvin. Festival events will be held on Sat. March 1st and Sat. March 8th.

Please bring the following with you:
• Your original sheet music, marked with clips or labels to the particular song if it is in a collection, with the first measure of each line numbered in pencil (counting measures).
• Non-Memorized Hymns must provide 2 original copies of the music
• Color-coded critique sheet for each event, completed with student information
Piano Solo Events (Hymns and Patriotic/Folk included) – White
Ensemble Events – Green
Concerto Events – Pink
Vocal Solo Events – Blue
Arrive at the college about 15 minutes prior to your performance time to register. After registering, parents will be directed to the parent waiting area, and students may be asked to wait in the hall near the judge’s room, or in the waiting area until called. Each student will be judged in a private audition. After your performance in each event you registered for, you are finished and may leave.

Theory Test Event: Students taking the theory exam should bring a pencil. Once they complete their performance events, students should find the theory room and take the test before leaving the festival.

Scores: Students receiving any Superior rating (including plusses and minuses) will be eligible to compete in the Texas Federated Music Clubs State Festival. That Competition will be held May 17,2008 at Texas State University, Music Building, in San Marcos. One student for each level and event will be chosen as All-State Musician out of all competing students in the state of Texas.

Earning a cup in any event requires 15 points - and usually it takes 3-4 years to earn one.
